Judges’ incarceration decisions in Mozambique: The need to decolonise the punitive approach to criminal justice
This article, authored by Dr. Tina Lorizzo, examines prison reforms in Mozambique since 2013, highlighting the role of judicial decisions in the penitentiary system. Despite legislative changes, such as the introduction of alternatives to imprisonment, challenges like overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure still persist. Solutions are proposed, including the use of legal instruments and the decolonisation of the general approach to criminal justice, recognising and respecting local knowledge. These measures aim to promote a more inclusive and effective justice system in Mozambique. The article will be translated into Portuguese soon.
